Kansas City, Missouri
Kansas City is the largest city in the state of Missouri located on the border with the state of Kansas. The city is famous for its fountains and claims to have the second largest number of fountains in the world after Rome which is why it is nicknamed the City of Fountains. Kansas City is also known as the “Paris of the Plains” because it has more boulevards than any other city after Paris as well the “Heart of America” due to its close proximity to the geographic center of the United States. Kansas City may not be as popular travel destination than other US cities but it is a beautiful place which offers a lot to see and do.
Downtown Kansas City is currently undergoing a large scale remodeling but it is worth visiting for its beautiful art deco buildings and large number of impressive skyscrapers such as the New York Life Building, the Boley Clothing Company Building which was one of the first glass curtain-wall buildings in the world (built in 1909), 909 Walnut, Kansas City City Hall, 925 Grand (the former Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City), Jackson County Courthouse, One Kansas City Place, 1201 Walnut and many others. One of the most recognizable city's landmarks is the Kansas City Power and Light Building. Downtown is also home to the spectacular Liberty Memorial dedicated to the fallen soldiers of the World War I. The Memorial declared the National Historic Landmark also includes The National World War I Museum.
Near Downtown Kansas City you can find several historic neighborhoods including the Westport and the 18th and Vine Historic District. The Westport is home to many prominent historic buildings and is also known as the site of the Battle of Westport in which the Union forces led by Major General Samuel R. Curtis decisively defeated the Confederates under Major General Sterling Price. The 18th Vine Historic District that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places is considered one of birthplaces of jazz music and is also home to the American Jazz Museum and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. The River Market also known as the City Market famous for its large farmer's market is worth visiting as well.
Kansas City is home to numerous fine museums. Visitors interested in history will be delighted by the Kansas City Museum at Corinthian Hall which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, while visitors who like art will also like the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art with an impressive collection of European and American paintings as well as sculptures but it is primarily famous for its extensive collection of Asian art. The museums collection also includes some Egyptian art works, Ancient Greek and Roman art, pre-Columbian art and a large collection of English pottery.
Families will have a great time in Kansas City as well. Both children and adults will enjoy the Science City at Union Station, the Worlds of Fun amusement park and the Kansas City Zoological Park which is considered one of the nation's best zoos.
